Misting and foaming and streaming, oh my! You’ve got a mess and you’ve got the right Simple Solution cleaner – which can be found at your local pet store – for the job. Great! Now you notice that the nozzle with the patented 3-in-1 sprayer gives you three options: mist, foam or stream. How do you know when to use each one? Different types of stains benefit from different types of application of the cleaning solution. You probably know to start with the basics:

  • Remove as much of the pee, poop, vomit, mud, and dirt as you can.
  • If you’re dealing with pet feces, use a doggie waste pickup bag to dispose of it.

As for what comes next, here’s a handy guide to help you make the most of your 3-in-1 sprayer.

Mist for Surface Stains

The mist function gives you a nice uniform coverage of the surface area – perfect if the mess hasn’t penetrated too deep into carpet fibers. Spray to saturate the area, making sure the mist covers a wider area than the stain itself. Blot any excess, but leave the rest to dry on its own. That’s when the cleaning action happens. Once the area is dry, vacuum.

Foam for Embedded Stains

Foam is good for lifting dirt and material from fibers in the carpet. This is helpful for set stains from urine, vomit, feces or blood. Blot with a cloth to remove the excess, then saturate the spot with stain and odor remover. Blot again, then thoroughly saturate the stain and let it sit. After the stain starts to loosen, saturate and blot again. Let it dry, then vacuum.

Stream for Odor Control

Odors need special treatment – especially urine. Stream works well in these cases because it lets you flood the offending area with a lot of liquid targeted to the right spot. Pet urine leaks down into the carpet backing and spreads for several inches, so it is good to spray a ring that includes several inches outside the stain area. Make sure you spray enough liquid on the stain. How much is enough? Here’s an example: a urine spot made by an average-sized dog on the carpet will need at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle. Urine’s chemical make-up requires products that use enzymes and good bacteria to break down the bad bacteria causing the odor. The good bacteria in the product must have moisture to live and thrive – so saturate and let the product sit.
